The word “remnant” refers to a small quantity remaining of something. Fabric is considered a remnant when there is less than one yard remaining and stores will often sell these pieces at a discount. The crumbling remains of the Frankish castle could also be described as remnants, small parts indicative of a larger whole now lost. Remnants are often undervalued, the word itself implying a lack of wholeness, but one of the central questions of the Spolia Collection is what can be made with what is discarded or discounted.
