The word “remnant” refers to a small quantity remaining of something. Fabric is considered a remnant when there is less than one yard remaining and stores will often sell these pieces at a discount. The crumbling remains of the Frankish castle could also be described as remnants, small parts indicative of a larger whole now lost. Remnants are often undervalued, the word itself implying a lack of wholeness, but one of the central questions of the Spolia Collection is what can be made with what is discarded or discounted. The Remnant designs seek to explore this question, built from individual pieces that when fit together create a strong and dynamic whole.
