The Edifice designs are considered recreations within the collection – designs built from the geometric shapes of the Frankish castle that inspired them but with little resemblance to the original source. The word “edifice” refers to a particularly large or imposing building, which describes even what little remains of the castle, and comes from the Latin word aedificium, which in turn combines the root aedis (dwelling) with facere (to make). The roots of “edifice” interestingly intermingle dwelling with making, and dwelling and making are indeed deeply intertwined in the creative process. Art allows us to more deeply dwell in the world, to experience it more fully and acutely, and dwelling in turn is itself essential to the act of creating – listening, sensing, observing, and questioning our surroundings.
