Euclid was an ancient Greek mathematician who established the foundations of geometry in his writings, most notably in his treatise Elements. Each Artifact design in the Spolia Collection is a proposition diagram from Euclid’s Elements which echoes the basic geometric shapes distilled from the Frankish castle wall. The foundational shapes are pieced in the neutral tones of marble and each design is quilted with colorful thread to mark the angles, ratios, and relationships within the shapes. Euclid understood math as yet another fundamental way of seeing and being in the world, of sensing pattern, beauty, symmetry, and interconnection, and these designs seek to convey and celebrate the beauty within the mathematical diagrams themselves, blurring the boundaries between the disciplines of math and art.
